Several school districts in Texas are using magnet schools/programs in order to provide a more specialized environment for children at-risk and high-ability (gifted/talented) children. This has become much more important in the last 10-12 years as school districts have been encouraged by our state and federal government to focus on standardized test results (as a result of No Child Left Behind legislation.)
Parents whose children attend these magnets schools/programs tend to be very enthusiastic about them. We would like to think that every district in Texas would strive to provide educational options (like magnet schools) to parents. However, things don’t tend to change unless parents start talking to district administrators and trustees (school boards) and requesting something.
We compiled the following list of magnet schools/programs after talking with the Texas Education Agency (our state department of education) and several organizations and determining that such a list did not exist. With some help from the TEA and parents/teachers across the state, we have created a list. We hope that this will equip parents with information useful for advocating for magnet schools/programs.
